Calamity James by Splapp-me-do Calamity James by Splapp-me-do
It's Calamity James and Alexander Lemming! They're characters from the Beano, which is a British comic for all you foreigners out there. =P

They used to be my favourite characters back when I used to read it, and my drawing style now is kinda based on Tom Paterson's (the artist) style. Oooh, I do love it so!

Also, if there was a Top 10 hardest cartoon characters to draw right, i'm pretty sure Calamity James would be number 1. It took me aaages to get him looking right. Especially THAT bloody SHOE! Grrarrrhhrrhjgggh!

My word that's good! I've tried to draw James many times in the past and all have been complete failures because of how unique the style is. I love all of the random signs and objects that James never seems to notice.

Oh GOD he was my favorite comic character!

The BEANO has gone WAY downhill man, since 2003 there hasn't been anything funny in it! They've turned it into a kids puzzle magazine with a few comic strips now! :(

That's his name!

James was the best thing in the beano, and your style realy reminded me of him when I read your first EOL comic. I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the character though.

Personally my favourite was the guy who does The Three Bears during the period for around a year up until I started going to University and thus couldn't really order it from the newsagent any more. He also does a lot of those "whole-comic stories" where the entire comic was given over to a particular tale involving most of the Beano's cast (such as a football match, or a treasure hunt - typically they pitted The Bash Street Kids against everyone else). He's brilliant at capturing expressions.

But yeah, the guy who does Calamity James is good too. I love all the random background detail and bizarre explanatory signs that get put in.

Yeah! I remember him! He did the nativity play a few years back, and it still has me in fits every time i read it. When toots threatens smiffy... :lmfao:

The guy who drew calamity james also did the kid with a huge brain (AAAAH! FORGOT HIM NAAAAAAAAAME) in the dandy.

Wheres the squelchy thingy? I liked the squelchy thingies... :tears:

*jaw drops*

Seriously, that could be straight out of the Beano. If Mr. Paterson suddenly contracts as chronic a case of bad luck as his subject and becomes incapacitated as a result, you could apply for the post and 99 out of 100 people wouldn't realise it was a different artist.
